Information

Description

This week our format will be a Memory-O where you will be given a map at the start for review only (clock is ticking...), then the map stays, while you run and locate the controls based on your recollection. The course will be designed so you will come across other map checking points along the way so you only need to memorize a few locations at once and the next map checking point.

You can do a "memory re-fill" at anytime along the course, at any map location whether located on your next control or somewhere you deem close enough to make a detour. It just costs you time.

The course will also be set to accommodate beginner/Intermediate orienteers who do not wish to run on the Memory-O format.

Halloween Night Special Considerations:

Some Spooky variations on the Memory-O are in order for Halloween night. They will provide good training to keep focus while orienteering.

Vampires, werewolves, zombies etc... all get 60 seconds off their time at the end.

These creatures are welcome and encouraged to chase humans on the course. Most importantly vampires and werewolves have the power to grab a map from powerless humans once at a map checking point.

Humans have to wait for vampires, werewolves, to complete their map check before they can get the map back,

However if humans carry some garlic they can fend off Vampires and keep checking their maps first.

… if they carry Rye bread they can fend off werewolves (this is the rye that is the active product. it does not have to be bread). I know, it is getting a bit technical.

… Zombies are kind of weak, so they should not be able to steal your map at check points but they can surely creep you out enough so you may forget your next control. Here is a quick look-up table to figure it out !

Humans with garlic can snatch the map ouf a vampire's hands at a check point

Humans with rye can snatch the map out of werewolf's claws at a check point

Schedule

6:15pm Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30pm Starts

8pm Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving.

Courses

Beginner/Intermediate course: No Memory-O format for this one. Classic point to point. You can use it to do a first quick lap, then do some of the memory-O laps using the course knowledge gained in this first course.

Memory-O Loops: There are 3 of them, each time you come back to the start, where some "memory refills" are available in the form of maps to consult (clock is still ticking...). This is in addition to the map check points along the course. Then you continue onto the next loop after reviewing the corresponding map.

Remember which loop you are working on though, as you will have to do "memory refills" along the way as you are now running without a map. 100% fueled by memory!

You can do these loops in any order, but it is recommended to go (a) , (b) , and (c), in this order, as they get more complex as you go

Memory-O course part (a) is 1km long as the bat flies and not too complicated, so you get a some memory warm-up.

Memory-O course part(b) is 1.9km long and there you can practise identifying catching features on the long legs across the park to better remember where to go.

Memory-O course part (c) is also 1.9km long and mixes long and short legs and is likely more complicated. You get the benefit of having done (a) and (b) before, so that should compensate a little bit.

You can do a any subset of the whole thing too if you'd like.

Safety Precautions

It is now dark during Wednesday Evening Training events, so a good headlamp is a must. Main hazards are a few ankle biters and the odd pot hole lurking in the dark, possibly a few vampires.

Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Headlamps are essential to see and be seen. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. Watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users.

Parking/Start Location:
Memorial South park, just SE of the central monument where you can access from 41st Av. There is some parking there, but also around the park boundaries. There is a small building providing protection from rain where the Start Location is marked on the map, on the NE bend of the oval.

Post-Event Dining

Dewan-E-Khass is a great Pakistanis restaurant on 41st and Fraser . Can be busy.

Acknowledgements

Without volunteers, these events cannot take place. A hearty thanks to all those helping put this event on.
